The camera, as well as the pen, is mightier than the sword. Haunting, sometimes disturbing, photos taken from around our world today. The Middle East, Gaza and Syria, too, figure prominently. Iranian women whose faces have been disfigured by loved ones using acid. Deformed Africans waiting for medical help from a western hospital ship. Minority citizens of the USA and their challenges in the 21st century. Girls in Somalia who must sneak out of the public view to play basketball. Beautiful nature photos and photos of animals in Chinese "zoos". African sex workers in Italy. Magnificent photos meant to evoke emotion. Not light hearted or good for any sort of quick visual perusal. Amazing photos taken by amazing photographers. For those like me who tend to take our privileged lives for granted, this book is a graphic reminder that all is not quite what it seems to be. A great way to view the reality of others who face mighty challenges on a daily basis, and do so with amazing grace. We owe the subjects and the photographers a great deal of credit for sharing these topics with us. Well worth your time.
