The Silent People Walter Macken 9780330303286 Books

Walter Macken (1915-1966) published The Irish Trilogy as a fictional rendering of the long period of British Imperialism in its first colony, as contemporary parlance would have it, from conquest to liberation. The Trilogy and other publications have recently been rereleased as e-books by Bello: hidden talent rediscovered. The Silent People (1962) is Part Two covering a mid Nineteenth Century period that terminates with The Great Hunger potato famine of 1845-49 that sent many survivors fleeing to Boston, New York and New Orleans harbors.

Macken is a master storyteller skillfully revealing the social interactions owner and tenant in the oppressive conditions that existed for most, the layers of social interactions that supported, including an introduction of the ‘Liberator’ Daniel O'Connell, all wrapped around a gentle story of suppressed and emerging love.
Good to see Macken rediscovered.

‘We are the silent people.
How long must we be still,
to nurse in secret at our breast
an ancient culture?

Let us arise and cry then;
call from the sleeping ashes
of destiny a chieftain who
will be our voice.

He will strike the brass
and we will erupt
from our hidden caves
into the golden light of new-born day.’
Must read part one, Seek the Fair Land and three, The Scorching Wind.

The Silent People Walter Macken 9780330303286 Books Reviews

I found this book consistently absorbing as it wove history with devised characters. People who descend from the tribes of Galway or Mayo need to read this. A wee bit of Gaelic language on board is great to have.
I read this series over 25 years ago and just reread it again. These are great books.
Compelling novel on the Irish Famine. Very well received in Ireland by a Galway based author.
The book is an excellent representation of conditions in Ireland during the famine. Also the historical perspective on Daniel O'Connell was informative. I would recommend this book and the others in the trilogy for anyone interested in Irish history.
This is a well written book with a great story set in one of Ireland's darkest times, the mid 1800's. It is the second of a trilogy by Walter Macken. It shows the Irishman's love of freedom at a time of hunger and despair. I read these books back in the early '80's but managed to assemble the trio again - as good as I remembered it!
Couldn't put it down. Based on true history, a very sad but compelling story
This somewhat slow novel provides some interesting background on non-fiction issues & events like Irish nationalism and the potato famine. I enjoyed reading it for that background, but mostly because I was traveling in Ireland for the first time while reading it. It might have felt like a bit of a slog if I didn't have that travel connection.
