White Hart Volume 1 Sarah Dalton 9781493710713 Books

This is the first book in the White Hart series, and it is a well written beginning. It sets the stage for what's to come in the following books. She opens the book with Mae and her inner battle about her gift and slowly she comes to learn the truth behind it and what it means to accept it. The theme of accepting oneself is very strong in this novel and it is done very well. The novel ends perfectly as well leaving readers hungry for more. Dalton creates a main character that girls would want to emulate. She is one that is easy to relate to and see yourself as. She starts out strong and grows in strength. She is independent and doesn't have her primary focus being on a man. Sometimes it seems like Casimir is only there to help drive the story not as a romantic interest, and that is something that made me love this book. Too often novels try to make a romantic interest happen when it isn't needed. Dalton doesn't do that.

A lot of time we see magic in the form of fire, wind, ice, water, healing, electric or mind manipulation. In White Hart it is nature based, something I enjoyed seeing, something different from what I have read in the past. The story felt complete when I finished reading it, but knowing there is more to the series makes me want to see what will happen, where else will Dalton take this story. The possibilities seem endless at this point. It didn't feel predictable nor force fast. It felt like I was beside Mae as everything happened. I felt her emotions and actions throughout every scene.

This was a highly enjoyable read and I do recommend it to those who enjoy young adult novels. It will show young readers a strong female lead who finds strength in herself and knows when to ask other's for help.

White Hart Volume 1 Sarah Dalton 9781493710713 Books Reviews

I Liked the white stag. It is a majestic creature and to see it used in the way it was in the White Hart was very nice. I have to say that Mea is favorite character. I thought the way she handled everything was good even though she seems young and naive. I thought the idea of the forest was really neat too along with all the unusual creatures in it that was cool. I did not like the way Mea steps back, how she let that witch of a girl let everybody think she was craft born and by doing that I think she's causing more trouble than what its worth and we find out at the end that actually is what happens. My least favorite character has to be Cas, I don't like him I don't know why but he just got on my nerves throughout the whole book. There's just something about him. The Book as a whole was very good, had a nice plot and story line that ran through with enough action and just a little bit of romance on the side to keep everything interesting. I would definitely recommend this for fantasy readers and there's a plus, it's free.
Short version If I were younger, this'd probably be 4 stars. I agree with Isa Lavinia's review the narration feels more like middle-grades level, despite the romantic elements that put it in YA. I'd also have preferred to know in advance that the final scene turns things around into a cliffhanger.
Anyway, 2.5 for this adult YA reader.

Longer version
It was well-edited and fairly well written (if occasionally a bit unpolished, tell not show, etc.), especially considering that Mae's narrative is told in present tense, which usually feels clumsy and/or artificial to me even when it's used consistently -- believe it or not, I didn't even notice until I was well in.
Her emotions are realistically young, which at times means she's a bit rash and/or selfish and/or whiny, but she is nevertheless a likable and sympathetic character. The prince is gradually revealed to have his own depths, and to have not lived quite as spoiled and easy a life as Mae assumed, but he's too eager to believe himself in love with his supposed craft-born bride-to-be, mainly because she's beautiful; it's not like they had much time to get acquainted before her abduction! Mae waffles between wishing the prince saw *her* that way, and not wanting to be stuck being queen, as well as between the desire for revenge, and reluctance to kill anyone, especially once she learns that her hated targets may know more than she does about her gift.
There are some creative touches in the dangers of the cursed forest, though it gets a bit episodic, and the creepy Nix's intentions are left unexplained, presumably for a later installment. Then, just as Mae (and the reader) thinks the plot of this volume is coming to a successful if bittersweet resolution, things take an unexpected twist on the last couple pages.
