How to Master Your Marquis A Princess in Hiding Romance Juliana Gray Books
If you love David Lynch movies, you'll love this story. The narrative flashes back and forth between the events leading up to the trial of the hero and the trial itself, ramping up the tension between the characters and suspense in the plot as the action unfolds at breakneck speed.Unlike in the first book in the series, How To Tame Your Duke (Princess in Hiding), in the second, the Princess assassination plot took a back seat to the mystery, surrounding the hero's imprisonment, and it's a very good thing. It didn't feel as if I'd read this story already, which sometimes happens in books with overlapping timelines, and the teaser in the epilogue has me holding my breath for the third installment.
For the sake of disclosure I have to admit two things: first, I generally do not mind suspending disbelief for the trope of woman-dressed-as-a-man, and second, I particularly enjoy love stories that start off as friendships. It also helped that the hero turned out to be such an appealing character despite his miserable childhood, adolescent trauma, and misguided youth.
It's not a small point in the novel's favor that the heroine meets him years after he's 'reformed' his dissolute ways, having sworn off drunk debauchery and gambling. The heroine is an endearing character in her own right: she's got spunk, intelligence, and honor. She has a reputation for being reckless, but you won't see her pulling TSTL - to stupid to live - stunts in this book.
In short, the story of a very well matched couple and their turbulent adventure, battling the odds stacked against their happiness, was a real treat to read.

How to Master Your Marquis A Princess in Hiding Romance Juliana Gray Books Reviews
When I first started this story I was little confused by the timeline change chapter by chapter. However, once I was acclimated to this style of writing, I was totally captivated by this delightful love story of the Princess and the Marquis. Theirs is a true love complicated by politics, assassins, murder and a Princess in disguise. The sexual tension is amazing and the love scenes sensuous yet so endearing it will have you begging for more. I can't wait for the next book in this trilogy! Buy this one and you will be hooked as well! I just realized this is the second book in the trilogy, so read the # 1 book about the Duke first, this one second and then the one about the Scoundral
What I liked about this book
I thought Stefanie and James (aka Hatherfield) were wonderful and the love between them was very believable. I loved Stefanie's personality and her devotion to James. I adored James. His love for Stefanie was epic. I loved that unlike almost every other book where the hero lets the "evil other woman" off easy when she has wronged his woman - James gets right in her face and threatens her. Loved that!!!
What I didn't like
I did not like the flashback / flash forward style of the story. It made it hard to keep track of what was going on and disturbed the flow of the book.
When all is said and done - I liked the book - but not as much as I liked How to Tame Your Duke. But, I would recommend it.
I have mixed feelings about the final book - I vividly remember Somerton from a Gentleman Never Tells and he was obsessed with Elizabeth. It does however explain the mysterious Markham. I am not sure how Ms Gray is going to make me believe that he will fall in love and redeem himself. I guess I will have to read it to find out.
Princess Stefanie is having a rough time undercover as Stephen Thomas. While her sister got to play at being a governess, she is forced to work as a law clerk for a distinguished barrister. The biggest advantage of this comes from spending time with the barrister’s dishy nephew, James Lambert, the Marquis of Hatherfield. James sees through Stefanie’s disguise very quickly but their relationship is threatened when he is put on trial for murder.
James might be physically good looking but his father has left him emotionally and mentally scarred. He is a champion of the weak, the poor and oddly enough the middle class. The latter comes from him investing in middle class housing at a time when the wealthy were fairly ambivalent. James assigns himself as Stephen’s protector and tries to take care of her even when he is on trial for murdering his step-mother.
Stefanie is your typical rebellious creature who risks exposure at every turn. At times she came across as fairly foolhardy considering the threats on her life but at others fairly naive. Cross dressing was liberating for her (apart from the dastardly moustache) as ‘Stephen’ is expected to use his brain rather than rely on his exulted position. The humorous scrapes she got into helped balance the dark tones of James’ trial.
You will have to suspend a good deal of disbelief in order to enjoy this one. There are quite a few mannerisms that seem decidedly modern and there is of course the fact that no one except our eagle-eyed hero can identify Stefanie as a woman. There are lots of flashbacks and they can get a mite confusing as the significance of them isn’t always clear. I suspect though that with the last book in the trilogy, Gray will bring all the errant threads together.
I got the sense that Gray had enormous fun tweaking staid historical romance tropes when writing this one and couldn’t help enjoying it. I think you will be confused if you don’t read "How to Tame Your Duke" first though as there are lots of references to it. The two books run parallel to each other which helps as we get to see how the different princesses perceive events.
