If you don't like quirky and weird characters in your books, then this is not the book for you. Morgan Gower is as weird and funny as it gets. His family is not far behind him in this regard. The story of how he met Emily and Leon alone makes this book a excellent read, but that's just the beginning.

It spans from 1967 to 1979 and though it's mainly about Morgan, Emily and her husband Leon, there's a fair bit in there about Bonnie, Morgan's long suffering wife. I found the contrast between the two household very interesting. The cluttered Gower family home, with it's many daughters, is an assault on the senses. Morgan, (whose hat and costume collection must take up a great deal of space), appreciates the simplified and minimalist lifestyle of Emily and Leon. By looking at their lives, Morgan is able to identify what's not working in his own life.

The ending has a nice twist that befits this offbeat group of people, an ending which I didn't really see coming.

Morgan Passing Anne Tyler 9780804108812 Books Reviews

Not Ann Tyler's best work. Improbable but humorous main character who starts to become extremely tiresome about a third of the way through the book. Try other great titles by this author.
I have always loved Anne Tyler's novels. But this time I found the Morgan so strange. He wanders through life making so an impact on others, with no recognition on the impact he is having on those around him. I laughed during the first 100 pages, but there so came a time that I laughed no more.
I just finished another Anne Tyler book that was written earlier in her career. Once again I feel like I've lived with another group of people/characters for the few weeks that it took to read this story. It was a slow read. I wished the first three quarters of this book flowed with the same dramatic intensity that the last quarter did. I didn't fully understand lead character Morgan until then. But maybe that's the point. Once the plot twisted, the characters seemed to come into view more. All in all I enjoyed it and recommend it for Tyler fans.
I loved this book. The main character Morgan is such a funny fellow. A hardware store manager, he enjoys dressing up and pretending to be other people. This leads his life down an entirely different course one day while he is pretending to be a doctor, and is called upon to deliver a baby.

All of the characters in this book are so well developed and comical in their own right. Morgan's wife, whom he eventually leaves for a younger woman, is spiteful but in such a lighthearted manner that the tricks she plays on Morgan come off more as harmless pranks than malice. I would highly recommend this book.
I have read all of Anne Tyler's books. i like the way she describes people, their personalities and their lives. Her characters are usually common people living simple lives, but she makes them interesting and so human...
However, I found it somehow harder to understand them in this particular book.
Anyway, Morgan's passing is still a good read.
Second reading of Morgan's Passing and enjoyed it just as much as the first time I read it. The story reminds me of "A Confederacy of Dunces" since Morgan is adept at creating his own reality. Morgan is a much more sympathetic character. It was interesting how he dressed to match the persona he chose for the day. What is surprising to me is how people love and tolerate him. I found the relationship between the wife and mistress very interesting. Only thing I did not like is his influence of the new wife and how they ended up in a depressing place. She would have been better off without either husband. I loved him finding his obit in the paper - very funny.
I read this years ago and recently reread it. It is not at all what I remembered! I recall its being so funny, but it's really not. Morgan definitely has AT LEAST a borderline personality disorder, but likely something much more serious. His wife is a careless mess (actually somewhat typical Ann Tyler), having tons of kids with such an unreliable crazy person. Anyway, if you can accept Morgan's eccentricities, it becomes more enjoyable, and yes, very funny at times. It's just difficult imagining throwing your lot in with him.
